Apply for the International Cadetship Program at the US Coast Guard Academy

Good news to all aspiring US Marine Cadets, you now have a chance to study at the US Coast Guard Academy (USCGA)!

US Coast Guard Academy

USCGA is one of the most prestigious institutions of higher learning in the US and among the nation’s five federal service academies. It partnered with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to nominate deserving cadets who shall study and train at the academy from June 2021 until 2025, for free. After graduation, the Filipino scholars shall spend a minimum of eight (8) consecutive years of service at PCG as regular Coast Guard Officers in rank Ensign.

International Cadetship Program

Accepted cadets shall undergo an outstanding four-year program at the academy under Bachelor of Science degrees inclined in mathematics, engineering, and science, with the following choice of majors and specializations:

  • Civil Engineering;
  • Cyber-Systems;
  • Electrical Engineering;
  • Government;
  • Management;
  • Marine and Environmental Sciences;
  • Mechanical Engineering;
  • Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering; and
  • Operations Research.

Aside from traditional classroom studies, cadets shall experience intensive training about navigation and law enforcement, which includes physical activities such as:

  • General shipboard and aviation training;
  • Seagoing experience;
  • Military training; and
  • Other operational experience.

With all the training involved, one primary requirement for this cadetship program is for the participants to be physically healthy and fit.

What are the eligibility requirements?

To qualify for the program, interested applicants must satisfy the following criteria:

  • Filipino Citizen;
  • 17-23 years old by June 2021;
  • Medically and physically fit;
  • Able to swim;
  • At least a high school graduate by June 2021;
  • With a general weighted average (GWA) of at least 90% and did not have a grade lower than 85%;
  • Passed the Standard Physical Fitness Evaluation (PFE) prescribed under the USCGA Physical Fitness Exam (PFE), Manual;
  • Not married and no legal dependents or paternal obligations;
  • No derogatory records or faced any criminal charges;
  • Have an excellent command in written and oral English;
  • With an outstanding academic record in English and Mathematics;
  • Passer of the following tests:
    •  Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or American College Test (ACT) with the following minimum scores:
      • SAT: Math – 600; Reading – 600
      •  ACT: Math – 26; English – 27;
    • American Language Course Placement Test (ALCPT) to be administered at Camp Aguinaldo after passing the SAT/ACT;
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or English Comprehension Level (ECL) with the following score:
      • TOEFL: 560 on the ITP (paper-based test) or 90 iBT (computer-based test) 
      • ECL: 80

The applicants shall take the tests mentioned at their own, and without the supervision of the PCG or USCGA. Test results shall all be final with supporting certificates by the time of USCGA application. As guides, applicants may apply for the tests through the following links:

  1. Application Form (Download Link);
  2. Personal History Sheet (PHS) (Available upon download of the application form);
  3. High School Report Card or College Transcript of Records;
  4. PSA Birth Certificate; and
  5. A written narrative stating reasons for joining the program and how do you think your 4-year experience in the USCG Academy can help the PCG.
